#04「Plastic Coast」in Taipei, Taiwan
2025.05.30

WORDS Gallery presents its exhibition #04 “Plastic Coast” at Whimsy Works Gallery in Taipei, Taiwan, from May 30 to June 22, 2025. Known for its commitment to both art and environmental issues, this exhibition is to address the marine debris crisis with the case of Tsushima Island in Japan. After being exhibited twice in Japan last year to critical acclaim and public attention, the exhibition is now being presented abroad for the first time at the invitation of Whimsy Works Gallery.
WORDS Gallery, established in 2021, presented artworks based on environmental issues such as climate crisis, biodiversity, and marine pollution. Continuing from the previous exhibition on marine pollution #03 “Plastic Ocean”, this exhibition focuses on how plastic and fishing debris are worsening marine pollution particularly along Japan’s island coasts. The gallery partnered with Tsushima City in Nagasaki Prefecture, one of the most plastic contaminated islands, to hightlight real, often overlooked conditions. Some participating artists even incorporated marine debris supplied by the Tsushima government into their work.
Four artists participated in this exhibition are Dillon Froelich, Keeenue, Hikaru Matsubara and Yufi Yamamoto. They all have connections to the ocean in their personal lives, which led to their participation in this exhibition.
